Engaging in her usual elegant style, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher once again finds herself entangled in a web of mystery! Waking up unusually early one morning, Phryne seizes the rare opportunity of free time after dropping off her daughters at the Blind Institute for their charity work. She decides to pay a visit to a university professor she had met during a previous case, and whose company she had greatly enjoyed. Over lunch, the enamored professor invites Phryne to dine at his home in Williamstown later that week.
While enjoying her dinner with her new companion Jeoffrey, Phryne stumbles upon two unsettling discoveries: first, an abandoned opium pipe in the park, followed by the discovery of a Chinese man's body on the beach. The cause of death remains a mystery, but is later deemed a homicide. Soon after, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's long-time lover Lin Chung goes missing from her home. As if that wasn't enough, tragedy strikes when one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered during a Chinese-themed party he is hosting. Phryne begins to suspect a connection between all these incidents.
To add to the intrigue, mysterious notes start appearing in Phryne's letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" as "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH". Alongside the fabulous and formidable Phryne, the story also delves into the mysteries being solved by Phryne's three wards: Ruth and Jane are on the trail of an embezzler at the Institute, while Tinker assists Phryne in identifying the sender of the ominous messages.
In this captivating tale, Phryne's exceptional investigative skills are put to the test once more as she navigates through a series of interconnected puzzles, leading her to uncover the truth behind the mysterious events unfolding around her.
